All batteries experience a loss in performance at low temperatures. The ideal storage temperature for most batteries, including lithium-ion, is 59°F (15°C).
Temperatures dipping down at or close to 32°F (0°C) cause a slow-down in the chemical reactions inside of the cell—resulting in a loss in capacity of the battery.
When users put a battery under heavy load at cold temperatures it can cause a phenomenon known as cell reversal. This is a common cause of failure in cordless power tools. Users who need their lithium ion batteries to function in cold climates should be aware of these temperature effects on batteries. Store them in a safe, temperature-controlled space during the winter months.
Keep Your Lithium Ion Cell Protected
Remove the battery from your cordless power tool before storage. Check the charge level and make sure that 2 LEDs are lit on your battery. If required, use a damp cloth to clean dirt and soil off the battery.
Store the battery in a dry place and out of direct sunlight, in a closed box for example. Temperature requirements: it’s best to store batteries at a temperature between -10°C and 50°C – dry basements, garages, or a well-insulated shed for example.
Store your lithium-ion batteries in a secure place, and place them safely out of the reach of children. Store the charger separately from the battery, at a temperature between 5°C and 40°C. Shipping via Rail

Marking and Labeling of Lithium Ion Cell When Transporting Them
Proper marking and labeling is required when shipping lithium batteries by air. Marking and labeling packages containing dangerous goods informs every person involved in its transport of what is inside the package and how to properly handle it during shipment, where to place it during transport, and how to address the situation if something goes wrong.
Durably applied or printed on the package. Visible and legible. Able to withstand the elements. Displayed on a background of contrasting color. The lithium battery mark, must be applied to packages as outlined in the Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations manual.
When shipping dangerous goods by air, the appropriate documentation must be provided by the shipper to describe the dangerous goods being offered. The Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods must be completed by the shipper for most dangerous goods offered for air transport. It is required that each field be filled out properly and legibly.
